This Year’s Wine Competition Once Again Sets Unparalleled Standards and Uncovers the World’s Best Wines

May 21st, 2012, New York, NY- In its second year, the New York International Wine Competition (NYIWC) welcomed over 800 submissions from the United States and countries from all over the world.

The NYIWC is the only major international wine competition to be judged solely by trade buyers. Each wine is judged by its category and retail price. All participating judges have purchasing power through their stores, restaurants, distribution networks, which results in their ability to have a direct impact on brand sales.

Once again held at the 3 West Club in midtown Manhattan earlier this month, this year’s impressive judging panel included buyers from top retail stores, sommeliers, distributors, and importers. All donated their time and palates without hesitation or compensation. The judges were excited by the high quality of known wines submitted as well as the large number of new wines looking to break into the New York market and the United States as well.

What sets this competition apart from others is that the judges know the actual retail price of the wine they are judging and will the judge the wine as if they are buying it for their company. The wines are presented to the judges in their category as well as their price range. For example, the judges will be told that the wine they tasted is a “Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 or later” and whether it retails for $26 or $39.
All wines are judged in a blind tasting method and are sampled for appearance, aroma, taste, mouth feel, and finish. Each judging panel confers together to come to a unanimous decision. The judges make their decisions knowing that their peers (other trade buyers in New York and throughout the world) will also be making real buying decisions based upon the medals awarded at this particular competition.

Adam Levy, the founder of the NYIWC states, “This wine competition is designed for both the consumer and the trade buyer for they both buy on quality and price. For instance, a consumer will walk into a liquor store or ask at a restaurant for the best “Merlot” at a certain price. The trade buyer also looks at their selection and will buy wines based upon the best value by category and price. Why should we not judge wine that way?”

Wines landing on these shelves are carrying awards designated as either: Double Gold, Gold, Silver, or Bronze though not every bottle entered received a medal, as is common practice with many other competitions. A Bronze medal indicates it is something a judge would buy; Silver medals designate the spirit that judges really liked; Gold medals are affixed to brands that the judging panel believed was worth promoting to their customers. Double Gold is an amazing wine for its category and price.

The NYIWC will be holding the Winners Circle showcasing the winners from the NYIWC for the Press & Trade on June 18th. The event will be held at the 3 West Club located at 3 West 51st NY, NY from 6-9pm. Please RSVP 9173380163 x 1 or at info@nyiwinecompetition.com

We are excited to announce that the New York International Beverage Competition will be showcasing some of the top winners from the New York International Wine Competition and New York International Spirits Competition at ProWein 2013.

ProWein is becoming one of the top international wine and spirits trade focus show in the world’s. This matches our philosophy of having a trade buyer only judging panel. There will be no extra charge to exhibit for existing exhibitors at ProWein and a small company listing charge for winners that are not exhibiting at ProWein.

This is our way to promote the winners of our wine and spirits competitions as well as the competition itself.

We look forward to pouring your winning wine and spirits!

New York International WINE Competition –
CALL TO ENTRY

We are very excited to invite you to submit your wines to participate in the SECOND ANNUAL NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL WINE COMPETITION (“NYIWC”) taking place on May 5th-6th 2012 at the Scholastic Building in Manhattan. Compared to other competitions this contest stands out from others because of its distinctive set of standards and one-of-a-kind judging process making it the quintessential competition for all wines.

COMPETITION OVERVIEW:

•	The competition is open to any international winery whose products are commercially available in their country of origin.

•	All wines are judged by a group of TRUE key trade targets – wine focused buyers, restaurant & bar sommeliers, retail stores owners/buyers, restaurant & bar owners, distributors & importers, etc… Unlike other competitions, these expert TRADE ONLY judges and their opinions make an immediate impact and have the ability to directly influence sales and a brand’s bottom line.

•	The panelists of trade volunteer judges are not involved for publicity or for their industry position as critics or members of the press. They are the decision makers, experts and willing supporters of the craft who have an authentic understanding of the business of buying and selling wine.

•	Each product category has a sub category for pricing. Therefore, a wine will be judged in its category along with other wines in the same price range. Each category will have its own pricing levels and details are listed on the submission form. For example, a $15 Cabernet will be judged against a $20 Cabernet and not a $45 Cabernet. The judges will also know the set retail price of the wine beforehand they taste and rate.

•	We are including a “Kosher Wine Section” which is a new section in the 2012 NYIWC. Kosher Wineries have the opportunity to submit their wines to be judged in the regular or the Kosher Wine section that utilizes the same wine categories in the competition. They will also have the opportunity to submit the same wine in both sections at a reduced submission rate. Trade buyers with experience in Kosher Wines buying will specifically be on the Kosher Wine judging panel.

•	Wines will be rated on a set of criteria including appearance, aroma, taste, mouthfeel and finish.

•	Upon completion of the tastings, panelists will confer and decide which samples are award worthy.

•	Award levels are Double Gold, Gold, Silver, and Bronze.
-	Double Gold: Phenomenal Product for Buyers
-	Gold: Buyers “Love” It
-	Silver: Buyers “Like” It
-	Bronze: Buyers will purchase it

•	Double Gold award winners will be re-tasted by all panelists to establish which brands may be eligible to receive a ‘Best of Category’ endorsement in their pricing category.

•	While other recognized competitions prize up to 85% of entrants, the discerning panel and ethos of the NYIWC is to award the brands that are most deserving and not everyone that enters the competition. Last year, the NYIWC awarded less than 40% of its entrants.

BENEFITS AND VISIBILITY:

The NYIWC will offer brand exposure in the following ways:

•	All winning brands will be listed on the NYIWC site with their image and link to their website.

•	The results of the NYIWC will be promoted vigorously to trade and consumer media

•	There is no charge for winning brands to use their winning award icons.

•	Medal winners will be receiving a medal representing their win at no additional charge and the option to purchase stickers to showcase their medal win.

•	Media sponsors will be listing all awarded brands and profiling the top winners.

•	There will be a formal press release disseminated on behalf of the NYIWC announcing the winners within two weeks of the competition.

•	There will be a final GRAND TASTING/MEDIA/CONSUMER EVENT for the winners’ after the competition to showcase the best of contest. There is no additional charge for the medal winners to participate in this highly visible event.

Introducing the medal winners from the debut of the NYIWC.

This year, the face of wine competitions changes.

May 24th, 2011, New York, NY- The New York International Wine Competition, which welcomed 726 submissions from 17 countries and 14 states within the United States had 2 Gold, 30 Silver and 119 Bronze Medals. The NYIWC also awarded “International Winery of The Year”, “US Winery of The Year”, “International Wine Region of The Year”, “USA Wine Region of The Year” and “Best Value of The Year”. This is the first major international wine competition to be judged solely by members of the trade who have purchasing power through their stores, restaurants, distribution networks and the resulting ability to make a direct impact on brand sales.

Held at the 3 West Club in Midtown Manhattan earlier this month this year’s judging panel included buyers from the top retail stores, sommeliers, distributors and importers who all donated their time and palates without hesitation or compensation.

Additionally, what sets this competition apart from others where members of the media are included in the judging process is the fact that the New York International Wine Competition judges evaluate wines within their categories at pricing parity. So, for instance, a Cabernet Sauvignon that retails for $30 will be judged with other Cabernet Sauvignons in that price range and not be put up against wines that go for $60.

While keeping to the philosophy that “like should be compared with like” when it comes to pricing, the competition also strives to only award the crème de la crème in a category, instead of handing out medals to every entrant. Only the truly stand-out wines end up in the winner’s circle and then, accordingly, find themselves placed up on wine and liquor store shelves and on the city’s best wine lists. In addition to considering similarly priced bottles against similarly priced bottles, each wine was sampled for appearance, aroma, taste, mouth feel, and finish. Each panel conferred on their choices to come to a unanimous decision.

Wines landing on these shelves are carrying awards designated as either: Gold, Silver, or Bronze though not every bottle entered received a medal, as is common practice with many other competitions. A Bronze medal indicates it is something a judge would buy; Silver medals designate the spirit that judges really liked; Gold medals are affixed to brands that the judging panel believed was worth promoting to their customers.
